Year 12 HSC Geography Fieldwork – Urban Places

Dickson, Canberra

This Year 12 HSC Geography fieldwork excursion to Dickson, a suburb of Canberra, offers students a unique opportunity to experience firsthand the dynamic processes shaping urban environments. As part of the Urban Places unit, An Investigation of an Urban Place, this fieldwork will allow students to explore the location and character of Dickson, focusing on the physical and human geographical processes driving its transformation. Dickson serves as a prime example of urban renewal, with significant changes such as higher-density residential areas, new commercial developments, and a major light rail interchange. By visiting the suburb, students will gain insights into how technological, economic, and social changes are influencing the identity of urban spaces. The excursion will provide students with a chance to collect primary data through observations, photographs, and firsthand experiences of the diverse cultural and commercial atmosphere in the area. Walking through both the newly developed Dickson Place and areas where urban renewal has not yet occurred, students will be able to compare and contrast land use and its change over time, deepening their understanding of the processes transforming cities.
