As a school, we always strive to provide our staff with the tools they need to do their jobs successfully, which includes continual professional development on what is best practice in teaching and learning. The aim of this is to ensure our students continue to maintain strong academic growth and are both supported and empowered to meet the challenges of the curriculum.

This year, our major curriculum focus is around Literacy. As a whole staff, we had the pleasure of learning with Associate Professor Misty Adoniou (PhD) from the University of Canberra prior to Term 1 commencing. Misty is a highly regarded literacy consultant who supports teachers at schools in Australia and internationally on effective literacy practice. Several of our staff learned from Misty during their teacher education training, and following our day in January, have begun to implement some wonderful strategies into their classrooms on developing children’s reading and writing skills by using high-quality mentor texts. We are incredibly fortunate to be guided by Misty’s expertise, and she will continue to collaborate in partnership with our CGS Primary School teachers and learning assistants throughout 2022.

The focus of this will be on how parents can support their child’s literacy development at home, including the importance of vocabulary development and spelling practices.
